Underwater sculpture, in Grenada, in honor of our African ancestors thrown overboard.

I couldnt not reblog this, it’s so powerful to me.

oh my god.

white people discarded black bodies. they physically tossed slaves over board, often times alive, like they were nothing but cargo. when i think of the savagery of the slave trade, i think of the callous way that white people saw black bodies. they gave not one fuck about the humanity of these people. they bought and sold human beings. they discarded human beings. they raped and murdered human beings. they displaced and dehumanized human beings
i honestly doubt the white people of today can even fathom the depths of the horrors of slavery. because when i see an image like this, it pisses me off that black people were treated like nothing, and white people have the fucking nerve to say “just get over it” when it comes to slavery. when i hear a white person say that, i look at them and think:
if it were 1865 they would have no problem seeing black bodies as nothing but cargo, and see these black bodies tossed overboard as just collateral damage. because if you know the horrors of slavery and have nerve to tell black people to forget about it, then you don’t see the humanity in black people today, and you surely wouldn’t have seen the humanity in black people during slavery either.

Oh fuck off. Black people aren’t the only people in history to be enslaved. White people don’t know the horrors of slavery? A lot of white people have been enslaved over the course of history you idiot! Fucking Hell, England sent off a load of Irish into slavery because they revolted! Black people aren’t the only people to be raped or murdered or displaced or dehumanized or sold etc. Every other race on this planet has had that, the difference is that they’ve had the maturity to realise that if they hold onto that grudge then they’ll advance along the track of human progress.
What do you even mean by the “White people of today” What about black people of today? How many of them are being put onto a slave ship and transported to the “new world”? The answer you’re looking for is a “no”.
Your point about 1865. Is going off what was happening in America. I mean the international slave trade was gone in 1807 due to the British Empire basically saying it wasn’t on. And in 1833, slavery was completely gone in 1/4 of the world (British Empire territory). I can’t be bothered to look up what the Dutch etc were doing at the time but they’d already gotten rid of slavery, so pretty much America was the last big dealer in slaves in 1865Let’s get onto my other point. Are you mad enough to think that black people are the only people to be enslaved? Who built the fucking Pyramids then? What about the Roman Empire, because they took an awful lot of Europe and during those times, there were fuck all native black people in Europe. What about the Mongolian Empire?I’ll point out the Ottoman Empire, an Empire which had Armies of slaves. I don’t just mean they had a load of slaves, I mean their Armies were 99% full of people they conquered. So stop thinking that it’s just white people.Thinking about it your point about them often being thrown overboard alive, was actually illegal through the trades history in the time period I assume you’re talking about, so quite a lot of slavers didn’t dare do it, as the fines and potential imprisonment wasn’t worth it. Also a significant percentage of the overboarders, were jumpers, people who jumped to escape their future. But a vast majority of those that were thrown overboard, were already dead.
You know what, black people do need to get over it, because it’s something that’s actually starting to cause problems for the advancement of mankind now due to all the PC statements and how easily offended a small percentage of the black community gets. Don’t get me started on the likes of the EDL etc because they’re just as bad. You don’t see the Jews or British, or Germans, or French etc getting angry at the Italians for the Roman Empire. You don’t see the former French colonies getting angry at the French for taking their lands and people. The reason you see Native Americans getting pissed off, is because unlike black people, they were nearly all wiped out by the Americans. If black people were basically disappearing off the face off the Earth due to how small of a number they were then I’d understand getting pissed off, but they aren’t.
Also, you’re kidding yourself if you think that black people never had slaves because the irony, when in regards to your statement, is just amazing. This isn’t the first time I’ve had someone say “white people this” or “White people that” and from what I’ve gathered, 90% of the time is just shows how racist, childish and just moronic that person is. And that as soon as a person’s colour is used to pick them out, that person stands  good chance of talking bollocks. In conclusion, stop being offended for something that isn’t in living memory. Also, pick up a history book, you might learn something.

First of all, let me state that I find it darkly funny taht you are apparently a nerdfighter, but apparently neglected to watch Crash Course World History on the Atlantic Slave Trade, or the many episodes of Crash Course US History that discuss slavery. Like, John Green is bit too moderate liberal to my tastes, but he got those things pretty well covered.
Now, as for Egypt? Paid labor. That’s an accepted fact of history these days.
Other historical slavery? Yes, it happened. But you know how it was different? It was situational. It was mostly prisoners of war. They were recognized as humans, just property at the same time. A slave could earn his or her freedom over time, a slave could reach high status in society (Rome for example), and when the slaves tended to be of neighbouring people, they didn’t tend to get totally dehumanized.
The atlantic slave trade is different.
First of all, it is the single largest slavery enterprise in history. Tens of millions were taken from Africa, millions of them died at sea. Millions died in poor working conditions (this is mostly in Brazil where slaves were pretty much worked to death).
The atlantic slave trade also introduced wholly new distance between slave and master, where the slave was demoted to chattel, from the same root as cattle. Religious thinkers, philosophers and scientists in Eurpe, and the new American colonies tripped over eachother to come up with biblical, philosophical and biological justifications for slavery. Before the atlantic slave trade, slaves where slaves because someone had overpowered them and enslaved them, now, black people were “meant as slaves”, because they were descendants of Haam, the son of Noah that god cursed with dark skin, or because they were less evolved than white people, or what have you.
And reiterate. Tens of millions were taken across the atlantic. The single largest project of forced relocation in human history. In comparison, you talk about the Irish. 165,000 were shipped to Australia. That’s twenty times less than the number of Africans who died during the trip across.
It’s important to understand this history, but let’s fast forward to today, because you seem so keen to tell black people to “get over it”.
Despite the end of slavery, full civil rights to black Americans was not granted until the 1960’s.
The slaves set free were not helped by the government in any way. There was no program to help them get their life together. No free land, no money, nothing. Most of them had to become farm hands doing pretty much the same work they did before. And all the while, the pro-slavery southerners, bitter about their defeat took it out regularly on the free blacks. Between the end of the civil war and thesigning of the civil rights act, hundreds of thousands of black people were lynched. And countless more were run out of their homes, assaulted, and harassed if they came to the wrong part of town.
Before 1965, many US states had laws specifically designed to prevent black people from voting, from being trated fairly at work, and even trying to escape the opression by moving to another state.
Aand slavery ended with the civil war, right? Well, no. In the thirteenth amendment, it still states that it is forbidden to force someone work without pay, unlss they are a prisoner — and just so conincidentaly, black people have the tendency to be mmore liekly sentecned to jail thana  white person for the same crime, as well as serving longer sentences, and having more problem rehabilitating after prison and end up being sent back (a white person with a criminal record, statistically, is more likely to get a job thana  black person without a criminal record). And it’s no small business, either. US army equipment is produced by prison labor.
Let’s also not forget that the US constitution still has mention of black people being counted as 3/5ths a person.
And in the 19th century, as black people moved to Chicago, los Angeles, the San Fransisco Bay Area, anywhere they went, explicit, or implicit racial bias in local zoning laws meant, that there were only select neighbourhoods where black people could even buy property, and the police would often stop black people caught walking or driving in a white neighbourhood, just to make a point out of them not being welcome.
And then came the war on drugs, during which new laws meant longer sentences, and even life in jail for having three sentences, was weaponized against black communities. Majority of drug users in the US are white, the majority of people in jail arrested for drug posession are black. Remember what I said about the thirteenth amendment?

You don’t see the former French colonies getting angry at the French for taking their lands and people.

OK, you have obviously never been to Cote d’Ivoire or other former French colonies. And man, the Algerians just LOVE the Franch, too, right?
In conclusion, go fuck yourself.

It’s real funny [except not funny at all] how the way to devalue, dehumanize and gaslight women is to say they have Daddy Issues

Daddy Issues became a well known thing because men have become known for abusing and leaving their children

And yet, somehow that’s a reflection on the daughter and not men

But Feminists make up sexism right?
